Buceo en el Mar Rojo: Small Crack

Small Crack es una de las inmersiones mas divertidas del Mar Rojo. Bajar por el cabo hasta los 15 metros y dejarte llevar por la corriente admirando el arrecife que vas dejando a tu izquierda es todo lo que tienes que hacer en esta inmersión «caribeña» en estado puro.

En Shaab Mahmoud, arrecife que separa el Sinaí del estrecho de Gubal, cerca de Beacon Rock, se encuentra el popular punto de buceo «Small Crack», asequible a todos los buceadores y lugar de paso donde pasar la noche en los cruceros vida a bordo, o realizar una divertida pero fácil inmersión por la tarde, cuando ya el nitrógeno se va acumulando en nuestros organismos, tras las inmersiones de la mañana en los cercanos Thistlegorm o Dunraven.

Shaab mahmound es un arrecife que corre paralelo a la costa del Sinaí de Noroeste a Suroeste, formando una laguna interior perfecta para que los cruceros pasen la noche o realicen tranquilas inmersiones nocuturnas. La cara exterior del arrecife es una suave pared de coral, con una inclinación media de unos 45º que va desde superficie hasta una cota máxima de unos 18-20, donde encontramos un lecho de arena y coral. Es un lugar donde suele haber frecuentes corrientes de norte a sur debido a formar parte del estrecho de Gubal, por lo que el coral es muy variado, está muy bien conservado y la cantidad de vida es impresionante, siendo frecuente la observación de pelágicos y delfines en el azul a nuestra derecha cuando la corriente es mas intensa.

El nombre de Small Crack se refiere a una pequeña fractura en el arrecife de Shaab Mahmoud y que permite el paso, tanto buceando como en semi rígida, desde la parte exterior del arrecife hasta la laguna interior donde fondean los barcos. El nombre de Small crack le viene en contraposición al de «big Crack», su «hermana mayor», un canal de paso mayor y situado mas al norte, y en buena ley, debería llamarse «Small Cracks», en plural, pues el pequeño canal son en realidad 2 canales distintos separados por pocos metros. La inmersión en si misma es sencilla, y como ya hemos dicho, no es más que tirarse de la lancha y disfrutar de la pared.

En Small Crack  encontramos una corriente entre suave y moderada de norte a sur casi permanente , por lo que simplemente tendremos que cuidar de nuestra flotabilidad e ir corrigiendo el rumbo con nuestras aletas, dejándonos llevar por la corriente como si volaramos. La pared exterior es espectacular, llena de vida debido a la corriente y con gran visibilidad. Al transcurrir toda la inmersion entre los 15 y los 18 metros, la luz permite apreciar el coral blando y duro en todo su esplendor.

A la derecha tenemos el azul, directamente el estrecho de Gubal, por lo que no podemos dejar de echar un ojo de vez en cuando, porque podemos ver aparecer desde delfines a tiburones, pasando por grandes grupos de jacks y carángidos diversos.

La inmersión termina cuando vemos como a nuestra izquierda se abre un canal de arena que sube lentamente desde los 15 metros hasta el interior de la laguna. Dependiendo de nuestro consumo de aire, lo mas normal es dejar pasar la primera entrada y continuar hasta la segunda , subiendo por la lengua de arena hasta entrar en la laguna y donde nuestra velocidad se acelerará, ya que al estrecharse el canal, la velocidad aumenta.

¡Cuidado si entrais por el primer canal porque está plagado de coral de fuego, así que ojo si llevais shorty!

Recordad llevar el chaleco totalmente deshinchado en esta parte puesto que el canal tiene una anchura de unos 6 metros y en algunos puntos una profundidad de 2 o 3 metros, por lo que podemos irnos a superficie al menor despiste. Tras dejar atrás el canal, entramos en la laguna donde encontraremos pinaculos y pequeños grupos de coral a profundidad entre 5 y 8 metros, donde podremos hacer la parada de seguridad comodamente, o bien tratar de llegar por debajo del agua hasta nuestro barco si se encuentra lo suficientemente cerca.
