Yolanda Reef es una de las inmmersiones míticas de la ruta Norte en el Mar Rojo. A pesar de que muchos catalogan esta inmersión como pecio, lo cierto es que no transcurre en un barco hundido, sino que se desarrolla sobre los restos de la carga que transportaba, estando los restos del «Yolanda», o mas bien «Jolanda»,verdadero nombre del barco que los transportaba, una centena de metros mas abajo a borde de la pared, y no sobre la meseta arenosa sobre la que se desarrolla la inmersión, donde únicamente encontraremos planchas de acero y plástico, bañeras, containers muy deteriorados, los restos del BMW 320 del capitán del barco, y lo mas notorio: cientos de tazas de WC repartidas por el área.

Es una inmersión que ha adquirido fama por lo partícular del paraje, un arenal lleno de tazas de WC, pero que no quedaría mas allá de la mera anécdota de no ser por encontrarse justo en la punta mas meridional del Parque Natural Ras Mohamed, paraíso del buceo y exponente de una variedad de vida submarína increible. Así, lo que no pasaría de ser una inmersión en un paraje parecido a un vertedero, aqui la acompañamos de numerosas especies debido al choque de aguas de los golfos de Suez y Aqaba y lo cálido de sus aguas, siendo posible encontrarnos con diferentes clases de tiburones, delfines, tortugas, napoleones, toda clase de pelagicos y carángidos y enormes escuelas de peces murcielagos que vienen aqui a aparearse entre los meses de junio y septiembre.

El hundimiento del Yolanda
El «Jolanda» era un mercante chipriota de 1153 toneladas propiedad de la Sea Shipping Marine Company que se hundió en tras chocar en el arrecife de Ras Mohhamed el 1 de abril de 1981. Fue construido en nuestro país, en Gijón, por la Juliana Constructora Gijonesa SA en 1964. En travesía desde el puerto del Pireo hasta Aquaba, transportando principalmente cerámicas sanitarias y mamparas de plastico y aluminio, una fuerte tormenta le atrapó justo en en cruce de aguas del golfo de Aquaba y el Golfo de Suez, haciéndole estrellarse contra el arrecife, muy cerca de la punta mas meridional del Parque Ras Mohamed. El «Jolanda» permaneció embarrancado durante 4 días, hasta que inundado, rodó sobre su costado de babor hundiendose por su popa. El barco estuvo hundido sobre una meseta arenosa a poca profundidad durante 4 años, estudiandose la posibilidad de su salvamento y reflote, hasta que la fuerza del mar rompió los amarres y el barco se desplazó por la pared submarína hasta su definitivo reposo al fondo del acantilado submarino, dejando atrás parte de su carga. El Yolanda fue «redescubierto» en 2005 por los buzos britanicos Leigh Cunningham y Mark Andrews en una cota de entre 145 y 160 metros.

Buceo en el Mar Rojo,la inmersión en Yolanda Reef:
[box] Los restos del cargamento del Jolanda se encuentran en una meseta arenosa con una suave pendiente que va desde los 25 metros donde empieza el cortado de la pared, hasta la cota de 10 o 12 metros de profundidad donde comienza la laguna. La inmersión suele dar comienzo en el primero de los dos promontorios, Shark Reef, sobre la pared, o un poco antes, en Anemone city, dependiendo de la pericia del grupo y de su consumo estimado.

En cualquiera de los dos puntos, la inmersión comenzará en dirección sur, dejando siempre la pared a nuestra derecha y el azul a nuestra izquierda, estando siempre pendientes de las corrientes y el profundímetro, pues un despiste, mala flotabilidad, determinadas condiciones de corriente o simplemente los escasos puntos de referencia pueden hacer que nos encontremos a mas profundidad de la deseada en cuestión de segundos. La primera parte de la inmersión la realizaremos en pared, tras pasar el pequeño promontorio plagado de anémonas que da nombre al comienzo de la inmersión, rodeando Shark Reef a una cota de unos 20 metros y fijándonos muy bien en el azul, por si tuvieramos la suerte de ver pasar algún bicho grande….

Tras rodear Shark Reef llegamos a una lengua de arena donde podemos encontrar una ligera corriente que nos arrastre hacia afuera, y tras superarla comenzamos a rodear el segundo promontorio, Yolanda Reef, enfilando dirección oeste y donde enseguida veremos la explanada llena de los restos de la carga. Aquí es parada obligatoria la foto en la bañera o en la taza de WC, mirando siempre en su interior y alrededores antes, no vayamos a incomodar a alguna morena que la haya tomado como refugio.
En la pendiente de subida podemos apreciar, ademas de las tazas de WC, lavabos y bañeras, mamparas, los restos del BMW del capitán y una gran cantidad de vida, destacando la gran concentración de rayas moteadas azules y un par de napoleones, dóciles y de buen tamaño que viven en las inmediaciones de la laguna, siendo este el mejor sitio para realizar nuestra parada de seguridad.[/box]
