Bucear en Canarias: la inmersión en el Meteor II

Lo primero, una advertencia: el pecio del Meteor se ha deteriorado tanto en los últimos años que en nada se parece ya al barco del dibujo, y a duras penas está irreconocible. Sin embargo, no deja de ser una inmersión en el sur de canarias llena de vida y con una curiosa historia detrás.

El Meteor II era un hidrofoil de fabricación soviética hundido en 2003 frente al puerto de «El Pajar» y que se dedicaba a recorridos turísticos. Un hidrofoil es un barco que a medida que aumenta su velocidad, sube su quilla fuera del agua sustentandose solamente con unos planos y quedándo únicamente sumergidas las hélices propulsoras y el timón, por lo que al reducir sensiblemente el rozamiento contra el agua, se convierte en una nave muy rápida.

Durante un tiempo los buceadores tuvimos la suerte de disfrutar de este pecio, realmente curioso, ya que su posición de navegación sobre el fondo de arena y su forma peculiar, le daban un aspecto  de nave de espacial directamente salida de la película «star Treck». Sin embargo, al hundirse a relativamente poca profundidad y sin resguardo cercano, las tormentas y temporales invernales no tardaron en deteriorarlo. Primero, la cubierta superior voló, dejando a la vista las sillas de los pasajeros y el puente de mando, y posteriores tormentas en los últimos años, han destrozado el pecio de tal manera que algunas partes hoy son dificilmente reconocibles.

A pesar del avanzado estado de deterioro del pecio, la del Meteor sigue siendo una opción interesante, ya que los restos albergan gran cantidad de vida, y es muy curioso comparar las fotos de hace apenas 10 años con los restos actuales para darnos cuenta de esa inmensa fuerza incontrolable que es el mar a veces.

Los restos de barco se encuentran en un fondo arenóso entre los 17 y los 22 metros de profundidad, y al crear el barco un pequeño arrecife artifical en el lecho de arena, el lugar está lleno de vida. Bajamos desde la lancha por el cabo de fondeo y lo primero que vemos es el habitual banco de roncadores que se aloja en los restos del pecio, formando una cortina de peces que no dejan ver más allá en muchas ocasiones. En la arena es frecuente ver chuchos y angelotes y debemos de estár atentos al azul pues es frecuente ver pasar grupos de rápidos medregales y bancos de barracudas.

La inmersión es sencilla, pues no es muy profunda y la corriente, aunque frecuente, no suele ser demasiado intensa. Los restos no tienen pérdida, pues el Meteor medía apenas 30 metros de eslora por 9 de manga, por lo que el recorrido se limita a dar unas cuantas vueltas a los restos en busca de vida, sin poder evitar comparar lo que está ante nuestros ojos con las fotografías y dibujos que hemos visto anteriormente y que ilustran este post.
Respecto al pecio, y a pesar de que lo que que queda en el fóndo dificilmente puede llamarse ya barco, aún son reconocibles ciertas estructuras como las plataformas de los asientos de los pasajeros, la entrada al puente o los restos de sus potentes motores.
